Do this when you get home
- Cut on a slant just above a node (the swollen "joint" on the stem). Cutting through the node drinks poorly.
- Strip the leaves that would sit underwater
- Stand them in clean water, about 1/3 of the way up is enough
Day to day
- Change the water every 2-3 days, and trim the stems a little each time
- They're sensitive to ethylene. Keep them away from fruit and spent flowers.
- Somewhere cool, they can last more than two weeks
What the colors mean
- Red carnationA warm love, wishing Mom good health
- Pink carnationThanks for a mother's love, always young and lovely
- Yellow carnationThank you, a lasting friendship
- White carnationA pure love, remembrance (mostly for remembering a mother)
* Color meanings are popular sayings. The thought matters more.
Common questions
The petal edges are yellow and curling?
Usually they're thirsty, or the room is too hot and dry. Recut the stems, give them fresh water, and move them somewhere cooler.
