Do this when you get home

  1. Cut the stems on a slant, 2-3 cm
  2. Strip every leaf that would sit in the water. Mum leaves smell bad fast once they're soaked.
  3. Stand them in clean water, about 1/3 of the way up the stems

Day to day

  • Change the water every 2-3 days, and recut the stems while you're at it
  • The leaves wilt before the flowers. Pull off yellow leaves as you see them. The blooms still look good for a long time.
  • For a gift, pick colorful spray mums or pompons. Big white and yellow mums are mostly for memorials, so match the occasion.

Common questions

The leaves are yellow and black, but the flowers look fine?

Mum leaves don't last as long as the flowers. Pull off the bad ones. It doesn't hurt the look.

The stem ends are slimy and the water smells?

Bacteria in the water. Cut a piece off the stems, wash the vase, and use fresh water. Change it more often from now on.
