How to keep cut roses fresh in a vase

Cut rose

DifficultyEasy
SeasonYear-round
Cut flowersVase life varies with freshness and conditions

Meaning

Love and passion (red); first love, being moved (pink); purity (white)

This guide is for a cut rose bouquet, not a rose bush. Start with a clean vase, fresh water and flower food; keep the bouquet cool.

Safe for cats and dogs. Any plant can still upset a pet’s stomach if they eat a lot, so keep it out of reach.

Light

Cool spot, out of direct sun

Water

Check daily; replace cloudy water

Temperature

Away from heaters and hot windows

Preservative

Commercial flower food, mixed as directed

Do this when you get home

  1. Wash the vase with hot, soapy water and rinse it.
  2. Remove leaves below the waterline. Avoid stripping thorns: wounds can let microbes into rose stems.
  3. With a clean, sharp tool, trim roughly 1–2.5 cm from each stem without crushing it, then place it in water promptly.
  4. Mix commercial flower food using the packet’s water volume. Keep the remaining healthy foliage.

Day to day

  • Check the water level every day and top it up as needed.
  • If the water turns cloudy or smells, wash the vase, recut the stems and use fresh solution.
  • Keep roses away from direct sunlight, heaters, drafts and ripening fruit.

Common questions

How often should I change water for cut roses?

Check daily. Replace cloudy or smelly water immediately, using a clean vase and fresh flower-food solution.

What should I check when cut roses droop?

Check the water level and cleanliness first, then refresh the solution and recut the stems. Recovery is not guaranteed; age and handling also affect vase life.

Should I put sugar or aspirin in rose water?

Use commercial flower food as directed rather than a homemade mixture. More concentrate is not better: measure the water specified on the packet.
