Oncidium

Dancing lady orchid

DifficultyModerate
SeasonWinter–spring
PottedBlooms for 1-2 months

Meaning

Easy happiness, a hidden love

Sprays of little gold flowers like girls dancing. Light, and festive.

Safe for cats and dogs. Any plant can still upset a pet’s stomach if they eat a lot, so keep it out of reach.

Light

Bright, indirect light

Water

Water when the mix is slightly dry

Temperature

15-28°C

Feed

Every 2 weeks while it's growing, with an orchid fertilizer

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it somewhere bright, out of midday sun
  2. Oncidium roots like air. When the mix surface is slightly dry, water it through.

Day to day

  • It likes humid air. Mist around it often, but don't let water sit in the crown.
  • The spikes are thin. A stake, used gently, will hold them.
  • After the flowers fade, cut the spike off at the base

Common questions

The pseudobulb (the ball under the leaves) is wrinkled?

It's thirsty, or the roots have rotted and can't drink. Check the roots first. Healthy ones are white-green and plump.
