Venus flytrap

Flytrap

DifficultyNeeds care
SeasonYear-round
FoliageA perennial. It rests in winter.

Meaning

Strength, something of its own

A plant that "eats" bugs. Touch a leaf and it snaps shut.

Safe for cats and dogs. Any plant can still upset a pet’s stomach if they eat a lot, so keep it out of reach.

Light

Plenty of sun

Water

Distilled water or rainwater. Keep a shallow tray under the pot.

Temperature

5-30°C. In winter it needs a cold rest.

Feed

Never fertilize

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it on the sunniest windowsill. Without enough light it goes green, and the traps get small.
  2. Only distilled water, rainwater, or pure water. Minerals in tap water slowly hurt the roots.

Day to day

  • Set a tray under the pot and keep about 1 cm of water in it
  • Don't keep poking the traps for fun. Each trap dies after it closes a few times.
  • In winter it needs a cold rest at 5-10°C. Fewer leaves is normal.

Common questions

Do I need to feed it meat?

No. Indoors it catches the odd little insect, and it can live on photosynthesis even if it doesn't. Never feed it meat.

A trap turned black?

Traps have a lifespan. Cut off the black one. New ones still come.
