Nerve plant

Fittonia

DifficultyModerate
SeasonYear-round
FoliageA perennial

Meaning

A clear head, warmth

Leaves covered in colored netting. Small and sweet, and a bit dramatic.

Safe for cats and dogs. Any plant can still upset a pet’s stomach if they eat a lot, so keep it out of reach.

Light

Bright, indirect light

Water

Keep it moist. Don't let it dry out.

Temperature

18-28°C, not below 15°C

Feed

Once a month in spring and summer, with a weak fertilizer

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it somewhere bright, out of direct sun
  2. Keep the soil moist. The moment it dries, every leaf flops.

Day to day

  • Floppy leaves mean it's thirsty. Water it through right away. In a few hours they stand back up.
  • It likes humid air. A glass jar makes a nice little terrarium.
  • If it gets tall, pinch the tips. The plant stays tighter.

Common questions

The whole pot suddenly flopped?

It's thirsty. Water it through right away. It usually recovers fast. If this keeps happening, the roots suffer, so watch the soil.
