Olive tree

DifficultyModerate
SeasonYear-round
FoliageA perennial

Meaning

Peace, wisdom, long life

Silvery-green fine leaves, with a northern-European feel. It needs plenty of light.

Safe for cats and dogs. Any plant can still upset a pet’s stomach if they eat a lot, so keep it out of reach.

Light

Full sun. The more, the better.

Water

On the dry side. Water only when it's bone-dry.

Temperature

Very adaptable, down to -5°C

Feed

Once a month in spring and summer

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it on the sunniest balcony or windowsill. In a dim room it drops leaves easily.
  2. Water only when the soil is bone-dry. Olives take drought and hate wet feet.

Day to day

  • In winter, water a bit less
  • Turn the pot now and then so every side gets sun
  • You can prune it into a ball, or a single trunk

Common questions

It kept dropping leaves after I brought it home?

Usually not enough light. Move it to the sunniest spot, and ease up on watering.
