Clematis

Virgin's bower

DifficultyNeeds care
SeasonSpring–summer
PottedBlooms for 1-2 months; some kinds flower again

Meaning

Integrity, a beautiful heart

The "queen of the vines." Big flowers covering a trellis are a real sight.

The whole plant is poisonous. The sap irritates skin. People, cats, and dogs should not eat it.

Light

Full sun (shade the roots)

Water

Water when it dries. It hates sitting wet.

Temperature

It takes cold and hates stuffy heat

Feed

Every 2 weeks while it's growing

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it on a sunny balcony, and give it a trellis
  2. The roots like to stay cool. A layer of bark on the soil, or a low plant for shade, helps.

Day to day

  • Pruning depends on the type. When you buy it, ask which pruning group it is.
  • Stuffy summer heat brings wilt. Give it air.

Common questions

A whole stem suddenly died back?

Usually wilt, or roots that got too hot and too wet. Cut off the dead stems and give it more air.
