Cattleya

Queen of the orchids

DifficultyNeeds care
SeasonFall through spring
PottedA single bloom lasts 2-4 weeks

Meaning

Respect, admiration, charm

The "queen of the orchids." Big, bright flowers, and a scent.

Safe for cats and dogs. Any plant can still upset a pet’s stomach if they eat a lot, so keep it out of reach.

Light

Bright light. It wants more sun than a moth orchid.

Water

Let the mix dry out, then water it through

Temperature

15-30°C, not below 12°C

Feed

Every 2 weeks while it's growing, with an orchid fertilizer

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it by the brightest window in the house (shade it at midday in summer)
  2. Cattleyas hate being wet. Let the mix dry out, then water it through.

Day to day

  • Not enough light is the main reason it won't bloom. Give it as much light as you can.
  • It likes air. Stuffy, damp heat rots the roots.
  • After the flowers fade, cut off the spike

Common questions

Lots of leaves, no flowers?

Nine times out of ten, not enough light. Leaves that are very dark green mean it's too dim. Move it somewhere brighter.
