Elephant ear

Giant taro

DifficultyVery easy
SeasonYear-round
FoliageA perennial

Meaning

Of one mind, sincerity

Huge leaves, and a lot of presence. The sap is poisonous.

The whole plant is poisonous (especially the sap). If a person eats it, or sap gets in the eye, it injures. If a cat or dog chews it, the mouth swells and hurts. Think twice if you have children or pets.

Light

Bright, indirect light. It takes shade.

Water

Keep it slightly moist

Temperature

18-30°C, not below 10°C

Feed

Once a month in spring and summer

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it somewhere bright, out of midday sun
  2. It likes moisture. When the top of the soil is dry, water it through.

Day to day

  • When the air is humid, the leaf tips drip. That's why it's called the dripping goddess. That water is poisonous too. Don't let children or pets lick it.
  • When an old leaf yellows, cut it off at the base. Wear gloves when you prune.
  • In winter, water less and keep it above 10°C

Common questions

The leaves are yellow?

Old leaves at the bottom yellowing is normal. New leaves turning yellow is usually too much water, or it's too cold.
