Buddhist pine

Fern pine

DifficultyEasy
SeasonYear-round
FoliageA perennial, and it lives a long time

Meaning

Long life, keeping wealth, good fortune

Often grown as a bonsai. Evergreen, with a wish for long life and keeping wealth.

Toxic to cats and dogs. Eating it causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Light

Bright light. It takes some shade.

Water

Water when it dries

Temperature

Very adaptable, down to -5°C

Feed

Once or twice in spring, and once or twice in fall

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it somewhere bright and airy. A bonsai can live on the balcony.
  2. When the soil surface is dry, water it through. Bonsai soil is shallow, so in summer it may need water every day.

Day to day

  • Spring and fall are the good times to prune and shape it
  • In summer heat, mist the foliage more often
  • It likes slightly acid soil. If the leaves yellow, water with a little iron sulfate.

Common questions

The leaves are yellow?

Usually the watering is off (too dry or too wet), or the soil is too alkaline. Fix the watering first, then add an acid fertilizer.
