Bird's nest fern

Bird's nest fern

Nest fern

DifficultyEasy
SeasonYear-round
FoliageA perennial

Meaning

Good fortune, wealth

Broad fronds in a bird's-nest shape. Shade-tolerant, and good-looking.

Safe for cats and dogs. Any plant can still upset a pet’s stomach if they eat a lot, so keep it out of reach.

Light

It takes shade. Indirect light.

Water

Keep it slightly moist

Temperature

18-28°C, not below 10°C

Feed

Once a month in spring and summer

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it somewhere bright indoors, out of the sun
  2. Water along the rim. Don't pour a lot of water into the center of the "nest."

Day to day

  • It likes humid air. Mist around the fronds often.
  • New fronds uncoil from the center. Don't touch them. A bruise leaves a scar.

Common questions

The frond edges turned brown?

The air is too dry, or it got direct sun. Move it somewhere cool and humid, and mist more often.
