Meaning

New beginnings, vanity (in China: good fortune)

A Lunar New Year classic. A bowl of clean water is enough to make it bloom.

The whole plant is poisonous, especially the bulb. Don't store it with garlic or onions, or someone might eat it by mistake. It's toxic to cats and dogs too.

Light

Plenty of sun

Water

Grown in water. Change it every 2-3 days.

Temperature

10-15°C

Feed

Not needed

Do this when you get home

  1. Put clean water in the bowl, covering about a third of the base of the bulb
  2. Give it sun during the day. At night you can pour the water out and refill it the next day. That keeps the leaves from getting too tall.

Day to day

  • Change the water every 2-3 days
  • Without enough light the leaves shoot up and flop. It really needs sun.
  • The cooler it is, the longer it blooms. Keep it off the heater.

Common questions

The leaves grew tall, soft, and floppy?

Not enough light, and too warm. Give it more sun and a cooler spot. You can gather the leaves with a bit of string.

The buds dried up and never opened?

Usually too warm, too dry, or the bulb was already damaged.
