English ivy

Common ivy (also called wall ivy)

DifficultyVery easy
SeasonYear-round
FoliageA perennial

Meaning

Loyalty, a friendship that lasts

Stems that trail, or that cover a trellis. Shade-tolerant and cold-hardy.

The whole plant is toxic to cats and dogs. Eating it causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Light

Bright, indirect light. It takes shade.

Water

Water when it dries

Temperature

Very adaptable, down to 0°C

Feed

Once a month in spring and fall

Do this when you get home

  1. Set it on a shelf so it trails, or give it a stake to climb
  2. When the top of the soil is dry, water it through

Day to day

  • Mist often, to keep spider mites off
  • If the stems get long, cut them. A cutting in water roots easily.

Common questions

Fine webbing and little dots on the leaves?

Spider mites. The air is too dry. Spray the undersides of the leaves with water.
