Sago palm

Sago palm

Cycas

DifficultyVery easy
SeasonYear-round
FoliageA perennial, and it lives a long time

Meaning

Staying true, long life

A sago "in flower" is rare. The fronds are stiff, and they have presence.

The whole plant is highly toxic (especially the seeds). If a cat or dog eats it, it can be fatal. Think twice if you have pets.

Light

Plenty of sun

Water

Water when it dries, and keep it on the dry side

Temperature

Very adaptable, down to 0°C

Feed

Once a month in spring and summer

Do this when you get home

  1. Put it somewhere bright and airy
  2. Water when the soil is dry. It hates sitting wet.

Day to day

  • Don't move it while new fronds are coming. They grow crooked.
  • When an old frond yellows, cut it off at the base. Watch the sharp tips.

Common questions

The new fronds are yellow?

Not enough light, or it's short on food. A little iron sulfate helps.
